Hazard Mitigation

Hazard mitigation is a broad term with very specific and real consequences for communities, businesses, and individuals. Local governments are uniquely positioned to prepare for and respond to natural hazards by preparing hazard mitigation plans, adopting floodplain management regulations, improving stormwater infrastructure, and participating in FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS).

Melissa has worked in hazard mitigation for over a decade, participating in hazard mitigation plans, serving as floodplain administrator, advising on green stormwater infrastructure, updating floodplain management regulations, and managing a CRS program.

Hazard mitigation and FEMA's Community Rating System (CRS)
Melissa’s management of Slidell’s CRS program brought the City’s CRS rating from a Class 9 in May 2020, to an 8 in April 2021 and a 6 in October 2022 (pending final FEMA approval).
